Paediatric orthopaedic specialist: the training.

Dr. Camilla Bettuzzi is a paediatric orthopaedics specialist. Her medical degree was awarded to her with honours by Bologna University in March 2006, with a graduation thesis on “Orthopaedic problems of Down syndrome.” In November 2010, she specialized in orthopaedics and traumatology at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna. The specialisation thesis was about the surgical treatment of missed Monteggia fractures in children.

During her medical education, she has been a member of the department of paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute. As a volunteer from July 2005 to August 2006, and then, as a specialist doctor in training.

She participated in a 4-month fellowship at the Center for Children – Hospital for Joint Disease, New York University in 2010. Her experience included attending the New York Ponseti Club-foot Center (directed by Dr. Wallace Lehman) and the Center for the treatment of neuromuscular disorders (directed by Dr. Alfred Grant). 

In October 2013, she obtained the 1st Level University Master in “Biomechanics, pathology and treatment of the upper limb” from Bologna University.

Awards and work activities

She worked at the Maggiore Hospital of Bologna from December 2010 to April 2016. There, she was one of the reference doctors in paediatric orthopaedics. From May 2016 to April 2020, she worked as a paediatric orthopaedics specialist in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Meyer Paediatric Hospital in Florence (chief Dr. M. Lampasi). In October 2017, she was given the High Specialization for the treatment of Congenital Club-foot.

She has contributed numerous publications to prestigious international journals and has been a frequent speaker at national and international paediatric orthopaedic conferences and courses.

The European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society awarded her the Travelling Fellowship EPOS in 2017. In that occasion, she had the chance to visit several medical centres in North America, such as the Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics in Memphis, and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

She was a member of the Paediatric Committee of the Italian Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery for the period 2020-2022.
She has been a member of the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society since 2017 and is actively involved in the following commissions:
– EPOS Nomination Committee 2021-2022
– EPOS Reading Committee 2022-2025
Furthermore, she was one of the few Italian doctors to be certified by Ponseti International (an international association for the treatment of congenital club-foot with the Ponseti method).

Specialisation as paediatric orthopaedic

She is a specialist in treating congenital club-foot, leg hemimelia, hip dysplasia, and lower limb discrepancies, as well as the most common problems relating to children’s orthopaedic problems.

Moreover, she is specialized in the treatment of congenital pathologies of the elbow and shoulder (congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle, radio-ulnar synostosis, congenital dislocation of the radial head …), and post-traumatic problems.
